Earth Day is giving you another shot at New Year resolutions. On April 22, along with over 500 million other people across the planet, we’re going to step back and take a good look at ourselves, and we invite you to do the same. Is your lifestyle really eco-friendly?
Here’s a bunch of green tips and easy tricks that you’ll want to apply every other day of the year. In other words… more tips on becoming your own guru!!!

8am: This is how we roll.
How you get to work everyday affects your carbon footprint. On Earth Day, why don’t you use public transportation or hop on your bike? Do your part to be greener. Pick up trash on the ground in the subway if you see other people are too lazy to stick it in the garbage can. If you really have to use your car, make sure your tires are properly inflated so that you get better gas mileage, and give someone a lift… Oh, and don’t forget to turn the lights off when you leave the house.
11am: Knowledge is Power.
How much do you really know about the modern environmental movement? Did you have any idea the first Earth Day took place on April 22, 1970? Take this quiz to find out more.
Noon: Lunch Outside
Don’t spend your lunch break in front of the computer Twittering. Instead, go out of the office, and eat in a green space. Have a good look at the environment you’re living in: take a deep breath of fresh air. Make a meal with leftover food in your refrigerator to make sure it doesn’t end up going to waste. If you buy a meal, choose foods that, just like GURU, were produced according to organic standards. Look for the USDA or QAI seal.
2pm: Friends with Benefits
Instead of going outside for a cigarette, Screw Earth Day on Grist.org. Each year, the website’s editors get cranky about this made up holiday, thinking EVERY day should be earth-tastic. This year, Grist is giving away for free their Nonpompous, Nonpreachy Guide to Greening your Day. It is an e-book, of course. Now, that’s knowledge you can put to use every single day of the year.
5pm: There’s No Place Like Home
Cook dinner from as many local ingredients as you can find. Think about it, if you buy locally, you’re reducing the amount of energy required to drive foods to your store. While you’re at it, try this vegetarian recipe that’s been sitting on your shelf for months.
7pm: Clean Green
There are green supplies that can make your house REALLY clean. Method’s mantra is simple: if you want to clean up the environment, start with your own. Their products are biodegradable and derive from natural materials such as soy, coconut and palm oils. The bathroom cleaners line is our favorite, because of its sparkling eucalyptus scent.
9pm: Pamper Yourself, Serve the Earth
With its line of Organic products, Origins is a leader in green cosmetics. If you’re going to take a bath or use skincare, do it with care to the environment and choose one of the brand products, formulated with the finest quality, renewable plants, earth and sea substances that are USDA Certified Organic.
