The startup company Busbud may have been established in Montreal, but its service currently helps millions of travellers plan their coach trips in 88 countries (or 10,000 cities) around the world. President LP Maurice welcomes us in their giant space where the sound of numerous languages hums in the background. “Our team contacts coach companies from the four corners of the earth and negotiates partnerships,” explains LP as we pass beside an immense window that looks out onto Mount Royal.
Busbud is a service that allows one to buy coach tickets and plan an itinerary online. The advantage is that it eliminates all the hassles that travellers sometimes experience, be it with language, strange currencies or simply waiting lines. “In my opinion an innovator is someone who tries to eliminate the hassles that are endemic to a process. We’ve really thought through all the steps a traveller has to go through in order to create the best possible experience for him,” continues LP as he indicates the nine steps on the wall. The site also allows one to compare the rates of different companies as one does in the airline industry.
We then take a few minutes to sit down with one of the other co-founders, Frédéric Thouin. “We receive an enormous amount of data from different coach companies. For example, we’re selling a lot of tickets in Brazil at the moment. Transportation is a category that is currently popular with Uber, Hailo and Kayak. And yet we’re still the only ones in our market!” That’s when we hear a strange noise that piques our interest. A partner from New York, Michael Gradek, is trying to join us through a remote controlled robot. Busbud, apparently, is already living in the future.
But for these young entrepreneurs, the experience doesn’t end when the tickets have been purchased. “Now that we know our users are travelling, it’s easy to propose itineraries to them, as well as travel websites, relevant content or even the possibility of meeting other people going in the same direction. Obviously, as with all adventures, that means a lot of photos and stories.” Accordingly, Busbud is currently looking for ambassadors who will be travelling this summer.
