Design GURU: What the Helvetica?

| by littleevie | category: Art, Design, Film, Nerd Up!, geek

What does American Apparel have in common with the New York subway system? No, this isn’t the beginning to a dirty joke (though you’re welcome to provide alternate punchlines in the comments section) – they use the same typeface to get their point across. Helvetica. To many, it’s just the option between Gill Sans and Hoefler in a scroll down menu, but to design geeks, Helvetica is god. Fresh, clean, appealing – just what we like here at GURU Energy Drink.

‘I guess it’s like jeans and a white t-shirt,’ says GURU’s own Helvetica-obsessed Artistic Director Justin Dallegret. ‘Classic, timeless, sexy and ya want to wear it all the time.’

Don’t believe him? You’re too late to see the MoMa’s exhibit, but check out the documentary Helvetica , released in 2007 just in time for the font’s 50th anniversary.

Take that, Times New Roman.

Style GURU: Meet GURU Photo Challenge Winner Neil Mota

| by littleevie | category: Contest, Design, Photography, Style

Neil Mota has gone and done it. As we announced last week, the Montreal-based photographer’s pic of gas masked GURU drinking won him first prize in our Street Style Photo Challenge. We thought we’d tell you all a little bit more about the winning artist…

An old school portrait artist, the majority of Mota’s photography is done in black and white, he always uses film and he develops his own work (meaning that $500 Astral Photo gift certificate should come in handy pretty soon).

Mota is of Scottish and Portuguese descent and both one of four brothers and a father of four boys himself (meaning the year’s supply of GURU should come in handy, too!).

“The photographers whose work I admire the most are Irving Penn and Richard Avedon,” says Mota, who is currently working on a book of portraits of approximately 300 artists.

Check out his upcoming photo exhibition, “Skulls,” which will take place September 4-6 at Windsor station during the Montreal Tattoo Convention.

Style GURU: Photo Challenge Winner!

| by littleevie | category: Design, Photography, Style

It’s been a month since six GURU-approved photographers went head-to-head at the Montreal Fashion & Design Festival, grabbing volunteers off the street for impromptu fashion shoots and posting their best pics online. The people have voted, and the winner is…

Neil Mota's winning entry

Neil Mota! Only a truly talented photographer could put someone in an apocalyptic, GURU-fueled gas mask and still make it sexy as hell.

He wins a thousand bucks, a $500 gift certificate from Astral Photo and a year’s supply of GURU Energy Drink (15 cases of 24 x 355mL cans of his choice) – a total cash value of $2200. Congrats Neil and a VERY warm thanks from the GURU team to all the participating photographers (and their willing models)!

Style GURU: Street-Spotted Cigarette Brooch

| by ladyshark | category: Design

Everyone and anyone who know me will tell you that I’m the person they’ve seen ’stop smoking’ and get straight back into it the most times, and with the most conviction.

Maybe it’s my french descent, maybe it’s the long, skinny cigarettes I like to smoke – either way, I’m still an addict, but I do believe that I won’t be smoking for the rest of my life. Clean energy, remember?

Yesterday, on my way back from Whole Foods Bowery, grocery bags in hand, I bumped into this fresh kid who was wearing this lego-style, cigarette shapped brooch, which I thought was brilliant. Had to take a shot.

His friend was sporting a colorful heart that reminded me of Kanye’s album cover art.

I can’t remember the name of the designer who makes these, but I love them – so if you know about it, please comment & let us know!

Design GURU: Paint Drip Table

| by admin | category: Design

This neat, emo table design by John Nouanesing is titled Paint of Die but Love me. You can’t tell if it’s meant to represent blood or paint, but the concept sure got legs! ;-)
