What’s yellow and white and coming to America tonight? KK Downey, of course!
He’s the JT LeRoy-inspired mystery man at the heart of Who is KK Downey? the first full-length feature from Kids in the Hall-esque sweethearts of the Montreal movie scene, Kidnapper Films. Since its release last year, the movie has garnered acclaim and prizes from Toronto to Tours, France, and got an on-air plug from GURU-approved host of The HourGeorge Stroumboulopoulos.

FUN FACT: Cast member Dan Haber (Frankie Lola) can be seen in the GURU Energy Drink testimonials at the top of this blog!
To celebrate the American launch of the Who is KK Downey? DVD, the troupe is going to be at Pianos NYC tonight for drinks, shameless self-promotion and live music from Apache Beat. But will the hipsters in attendance outdo the hipsters in the movie? Only time – time and miles and miles of plaid and mustaches – will tell.

Like what you hear in GURU’s featured videos? Two of those tracks come care of New York garage pop band ModRocket, founded in 2001 when all four members were in junior high.
They’re all still in their teens and channeling their Daria-esque wit and angst into tunes like “Sonic” (featured this month in our “Lazy Sunday” GURU video) and “July 5th” (featured in our “Shower” video), with their sound falling somewhere between the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and an all-lady version of The Virgins (with some sprinklings of Sonic Youth and the Libertines for good measure).
ModRocket’s good vibe and energy has such broad appeal they’ve been featured in both Teen Vogue and on Vice TV (video below), where they can be seen practicing in the East Village equivalent of a garage and, uh, stuffing their face with Oreos. What? What do you want them to do? They can’t even drink yet (at least not legally).
Watch this space for GURU Energy Drink’s continuing quest for fresh sounds, and check out ModRocket’s MySpace for more info on the band.
The fashion week heard all over the world said farewell last week, and we’ve got the scoop on the send off with some pics from Fashion Indie’sYoung Guns party. You can check out more shots care of photog Pat Miller, who seems to have taken a shine to GURU Energy Drink after being introduced to it while covering the festivities at The Delancey.
In his own (unsolicited) words: “After 29 cans down, my roomy Dave sure loves it too. Damn son!” Right back at you, Pat and Dave. Damn son everybody!
Okay, enough reminiscing. Time to get in gear for Montreal Fashion Week, starting October 13. After NYFW and Pop Montreal, you’re going to need beauty sleep and a major battery recharge (of course, GURU will always be there to help you fake it ‘til you make it).
Feeling a little dizzy from the back-and-forth, back-and-forth of the tireless teams of catwalk models? Make your way to Williamsburg where the pretty people are breathing new life into regular Fashion Week fare.
“Presented in a nontraditional platform style, the show consists of a series of entrancing experiences, ranging from a drive-in car scene to a posh living room cocktail party,” says Christopher ‘Tinypants’ Dang of tonight’s show from Love Brigade, a collective that comprises three fashion labels, a retail store and a music merchandising service. All three angles will be at work for their Spring/Summer 2010 Revival collection. Things kick off tonight at 8 pm in The Space on 8th, and you’ll find collaborations from (to name a few) hosts Famous Friends, video docs from The New Pop, Jump shoes, music from Finger on the Pulse, Gabriel J. Shuldiner necklaces and, of course, GURU Energy Drink. With so much sensory stimulation, it promises to give you more than the usual runway rundown.
You can find more info about the party and Love Brigade on their site.
Good things may come to those who wait, but there’s nothing like getting something early!
Jay-Z’s anticipated new album, The Blueprint 3,is available now, ahead of schedule (thanks, internet leak!) and already garnering rave reviews. The UK’s Daily Telegraph gave it four stars and said of the accomplished artist: “At 40 years old, [he] comes across as a well-rounded, sophisticated and diplomatic human being, more reliant on wit, charm and persuasive argument than all-out verbal assault.”
The first “Blueprint” album was released September 11, 2001, and Brooklyn native Jay-Z made waves last week with a 9/11 benefit show at Madison Square Garden, with appearances by artists like Rihanna and John Mayer.
Jay-Z also recently made a rare appearance on Bill Maher, who gave the rapper a gift of all his lyrics bound up in a book (aww, could it be that sharp-tongued Maher is just a big ol’ softie?).
Need more evidence that the rapper’s in line with the GURU philosophy? Jay-Z’s single “D.O.A.” has him touting the virtues of going all-natural – hey, just like GURU! – and calling the time of death on voice-distorting, robot-friendly Auto-Tune.

“To put it bluntly, if people don’t shop, people lose their jobs.” So said bridal gown goddess Vera Wang about the recession’s effect on New York’s fashion industry (the city’s second largest sector after finance).
